Mosaics are beautiful images made up of colorful tiles (or pieces) of different shapes and sizes. Help kids make an inspiring piece of art they can share with family and friends with this mosaic activity.
Explain the meaning of this mosaic to the children at the beginning of the activity and again at the end of the activity:
This heart is made of many different small pieces, and it is like our church. There are many different people, and they all look different, act differently, and think differently, and yet together we are a church where we share the love of God with each other.
Materials:
- Pencil or markers to draw the heart
- Various types of colored paper (e.g. construction paper, wrapping paper, old greeting cards, magazines, fabric, etc.
- Scissors
- Glue
1. Ask each child to draw a large heart on a piece of solid-color paper. Or provide paper with hearts already drawn on the paper for each child.
2. Provide colored paper for children to cut into small pieces. They could all be the same size, shape and color, but if they are different sizes, shapes and colors, this would help illustrate the diversity of the MWC. Help children plan or design what they will put on their hearts.
3. Have the children put glue on the back of each piece of paper and stick them in the heart and all over the paper, in any shape or design the child wants.
4. Read Galatians 3:28 and show a world map or the MWC map (interactive: mwc-cmm.org/map O mwc-cmm.org/ sites/default/files/resource-uploads/ mwc_world_map_2022.pdf).
a. Talk together about the different types of people in the world and in MWC. What are some special things about each one?
b. Talk together about what it would be like if the world were made up only of children or only adults. Do you know people who are different from you? Why is it sometimes difficult to get along with people who have different ways of doing things or different ideas than yours? Have you ever felt left out? How did that feel? Have you ever approached someone who was alone or not participating?
c. Talk about what the verse from Galatians means when it says that we are all one in Christ. Explain about MWC and how it brings together very different people to worship God and learn together how to follow Jesus.
